IN THE BEGINNING WAS THE WORD

by nele karajlic
translated by pero jovanovic

Nele Karajlic’s libretto for the opera “Time of the Gypsies” is a testament to the power of storytelling and the celebration of Roma culture. Inspired by Emir Kusturica’s renowned film of the same name, Karajlic adapts the narrative into a lyrical and dramatic form. Through his poetic words, he delves deep into the lives of the Roma community, exploring their struggles, dreams, and resilience. The libretto paints a vivid picture of the characters, their intertwining destinies, and the clash between tradition and modernity. Karajlic weaves together themes of love, family, identity, and the pursuit of freedom, creating a poignant and emotionally charged tapestry. Karajlic infuses the libretto with authentic voices, capturing the unique spirit and traditions of the community.

The immersive art installation “In the Beginning was the Word” takes Karajlic’s libretto and transforms it into a dynamic and interactive space. The installation invites visitors to immerse into the very dynamics of the language itself. As visitors move through the installation, their movements are detected and  trigger a response in the form of visual interferences. The words of the libretto come to life, swirling and shifting around the space, creating a dance of language. Each step, gesture, or motion becomes a catalyst for a symphony of words echoing the emotions, conflicts, and aspirations embedded in Karajlic’s text. The power of words becomes a living entity adapting and responding to the presence and energy of the visitors, allowing them to become an integral part of the artistic expression.

WORDS ARE IMPORTANT

Words are undeniably important, wielding immense power in our daily lives. They have the ability to shape our thoughts, ignite emotions, and drive actions. Whether spoken or written, words hold the potential to bridge gaps, inspire change, and create connections. They can heal wounds or inflict pain, build bridges or erect walls. Words have the capacity to define our realities and shape our perceptions. In a world where communication is key, the choice of words becomes paramount. They carry the weight of responsibility, demanding careful consideration and mindful expression. With words, we have the power to uplift, educate, and empower. They are the vessels of our ideas and the catalysts of understanding. In essence, words are the building blocks of our thoughts, the essence of our humanity, and the cornerstone of our existence.

In the realm of words’ significance, the preservation and recognition of the Roma language hold a profound significance for the Sinti and Roma communities. The Roma language, with its rich history and cultural heritage, serves as a vehicle for self-identity, resilience, and unity. For centuries, the Sinti and Roma people have faced marginalization and discrimination, and their language has often been disregarded or stigmatized. Yet, the Roma language serves as a potent tool for reclaiming their narratives, connecting with their ancestors, and fostering a sense of belonging within their communities. By preserving and revitalizing the Roma language, the Sinti and Roma can challenge stereotypes, strengthen cultural bonds, and assert their rightful place in society. Embracing their language means celebrating their distinct heritage, promoting intergenerational knowledge transmission, and nurturing a sense of pride that can empower future generations. In this way, the importance of the Roma language transcends mere words; it becomes a testament to resilience, cultural diversity, and the unwavering spirit of the Sinti and Roma people.
